.Dear Master ...
100 years ago Albert Einstein received a short four-page paper that solved a vexing problem he was facing. Bose gave a theoretical foundation to Planck’s formula of black body radiation by applying Einstein’s light quantum hypothesis.
Immediately the great scientist sent Bose a postcard claiming the work was a "beautiful step forward!" When a young Physics teacher from a fledgling university in a colonized nation received a postcard from Einstein in appreciation of his paper on black body radiation, it brought a sea change in the young man’s world and in the world of physics. Bose introduced a new way of counting, which later came to be known as ‘Bose Einstein Statistics’. Einstein applied this statistics to an ideal gas and from that followed a series of new ideas that led to the development of quantum mechanics. Later Einstein was critical of Bose’s statistical approach to matter energy interaction, but Bose remained unwavering in his reverence for Einstein. Dear Master traces this unique relationship in the history of science. |

An exhilarating experience to once again go through the revolutionary transitions that occurred in Physics during the 1st half of the 20th Century! I could feel a rush of excitement inside and the tingle of goose bumps on my skin.

A revealing journey through those heady years of whirlwind developments in Physics and Mathematics of that era.

While the movie progressed I was intrigued by the snippets of esraj music being played. Later it was revealed that Bose himself used to play the esraj.

Kudos to the filmmaker Subha Das Mollick for unraveling the history of the era, development of key physics equations in that era with a nuanced focus on the relationship between the two stalwarts - Master and his Pupil.

This film will inspire students and the curious alike t understand how scientific discoveries are made and wherein the individual genius lies.

It is nearly impossible to make such a film without showing physics and mathematical equations in correspondence absolutely rooted in the passion for physics they both shared. The portraits of well known physicists with their equations are absolutely brilliant!
